This Phoenix-Head Ewer with Brown Glaze was produced at the Ding kilns during the Song dynasty. It has a globular body surmounted by a long neck, with a circular disc-shaped projection at the center of the neck. Six small floral motifs are applied to the shoulder using the appliqué technique. The upper neck and mouth are shaped in the form of a phoenix head, with finely rendered details including the crest, eyes, beak, and scales. The phoenix is an auspicious creature symbolizing peace and prosperity under a wise ruler, as well as imperial authority.
The entire surface is covered with a brown glaze (jiangyou, 醬釉), also known as jiangse you (醬色釉) or zijin you (紫金釉). Ding ware featuring this type of glaze is rare among surviving examples.
The glaze has been removed from the base, exposing the body, and the character 官 (guan, meaning “official”) is inscribed on the base. During the Northern Song dynasty, the Ding kilns also produced ceramics for official use, supplying certain wares to the imperial court and government offices. The 官 inscription suggests that this vessel may have been made for the imperial court or a government institution.
